KNPC Launches “Enjoy Life Without Smoking” Campaign

Under the slogan “Enjoy Life Without Smoking” and in presence of Mr. Farouk Al-Zanki, C&MD, DMDs as well as a large number of employees, the medical Division-HSE launched on 31/5/2009 KNPC quit-smoking campaign at the Auditorium-Dar Al-Wataniyah.
The event started with a speech by Mr. Farouk Al-Zanki who stressed the importance of the campaign that was launched in coincidence with the anti- smoking world day. He also emphasized the need for cultivating health awareness for better life for all, adding that the event will reflect positively on improving public health, increasing productivity and economic development rates. He lauded the outstanding awareness role played by HSE, indicating that KNPC is keen on disallowing smoking within offices at all sites with the aim of creating a healthier working environment and protecting employees from the lethal diseases caused by smoking.The campaign functions included presenting lectures by a constellation of anti-smoking pioneers in Kuwait. The beginning was with a lecture by Dr. Yaqoub Al-Sharrah, Deputy Chairman- Kuwait Society for Prevention Smoking and Cancer. He underlined the dire need for all governmental and private bodies to cooperate for deep-rooting the anti-smoking culture and combating all smoking modes.
On his part Mr. Anwar Jasem Burhamah, Head of the Anti-Smoking Committee- Kuwait Society for Prevention of Smoking and Cancer and the Secretary General of the Gulf Union for Combat of Smoking gave a presentation on the history of sticking health warnings on tobacco products. He indicated that by the end of this year Kuwait would start sticking pictographic warnings on cigarette packs, adding that customs on tobacco derivatives would also hit the rate of 200 % in implementation of the recommendations issued by the GCC health ministers. He further reviewed the Society’s efforts and campaigns since its establishment in 1980 to combat smoking and help smokers quit this killing habit. This was followed by a lecture entitled “ How to help people stop smoking” delivered by Dr. Majed Radwan, member of the National Anti-Smoking Program-Health Ministry.
After the three lectures the attendants had the opportunity to pose their questions and inquiries that were addressed by the speakers who received appreciation certificates and mementos from Mr. Farouk Al-Zanki. In addition the medical exhibition arranged on the sidelines of the campaign was opened, offered a wide range of the best stop-smoking medical products.


WPE Europe Presents AGRP Engineering Design

KNPC is planning to build a new Acid Gas Removal Plant in MAA Refinery and revamp of the existing AGRP unit to handle 230 MMSCFD of Gas and 78,000 BPSD of Condensate.
The main objectives of the project is to meet K-EPA requirement that SOx emissions from incinerator be < 250 ppmv on a dry, oxygen free basis .KNPC engaged M/s.Worley Parsons Europe Ltd to carry out the feasibility study and subsequently the Front End Engineering Design work. The Feasibility study was completed in March 2008 and the FEED phase was started in July 2008 and successfully completed in May 2009, with a very challenging schedule.
Dr. Suad Al-Radwan led the KNPC FEED Project Team with timely guidance from Mr. Assad Al Saad, DMD – MAA. The KNPC team worked closely with the Consultant at their office in London. Major reviews, studies such as Hazid, Hazop, SIL , QRA etc were carried out by the Consultant.
It was a great moment of relief during the period of excessive work load, DMD – MAA along with DMD-Projects visited the KNPC Project office in London and extended their full support and valuable directives.


ITD Launches (BBS) Awareness and Training Campaign

Mr. Khaled S. Al-Asousi – Manager of IT department, launched a new Awareness and Training campaign on Behavior Based Safety (BBS).
Mr. Mohammad Hussain Nazar, TL Technical Applications took the role to coordinate and organize this activity with the help of HO Safety engineer Mr. Srineevasa Rao. One of the primary targets of this campaign and BBS is to develop employee’s positive behavior and attitude as well as improve the culture regarding the SH&E concepts by observing and discussing behaviors using the “NO NAME – No Blame” concept.The Awareness campaign started on May 26, 09 at the HO auditorium and attended by a large number of ITD employees. In his presentation Mr. Nazar reviewed the BBS program and its applications.
It is worth noting that the campaign started by publishing and announcing the BBS message using Intranet and IT Webmaster and then extended to training and discussion sessions. However the IT Technical Applications division is in the process of developing an electronic version of BBS forms. This will eliminate the use of hard copies and problem of physical mailing. The system will maintain users “Observers” rights and for sure will optimize the process of editing and reviewing for better and faster results.


MAB Refinery Honors PD Engineers

MAB Refinery- Projects Department (PD) organized on 21/5/2009 a meeting in its tent for honoring engineers who received PMP certificates from the international PMI Corporation in the field of projects management. The other engineers honored during the event included the ones recently promoted according to the technical and professional ladder.
In his speech, Mr. Abdulhakeem Esmail, Manager Projects Dept congratulated all the honored engineers and appreciated their efforts that led to obtaining the appreciation certificates. He pointed out that training the qualified and distinctive staff is one of the strategic goals of the department which extends all modes of support to them while driving for getting hold of such international certificates and be up to the aspired competency standard. He indicated that 14 engineers clinched PMP certificates and six were approved according to the technical and professional ladder.
Mr. Hatem Al-Awadi, DMD-Projects expressed pleasure for attending the event for honoring the engineers who received certificates that reflect the efforts which they made and their competence which adds up to the overall experience of the PD.
Both Mr. Hatem Al-Awadi and Mr. Abdulhakeem distributed appreciation certificates to the honored engineers, then all attendees gathered around the luncheon that was prepared for that occasion.


KNPC Sponsors Gulf Conference on “Vocational Health & Safety”

In tandem with its deep interest in supporting and actively participating in all local and regional health activities and functions, KNPC sponsored and participated in the Gulf Conference on Vocational Health &Safety that was held under the slogan “ Global Initiatives and Gulf Priorities” during 25-28/5/2009 at Al-Jahra Ballroom-J W Marriott, Kuwait City. The company also took part in the exhibition organized on the sideline of the conference and at its pavilion the Medical Division staff rendered medical services to the attendants.In an opening speech Dr. Modi Al-Humoud, Minister of Education and Acting Health Minister said that Kuwait has gone far regarding the approval of the policies and regulations that protect enhancing workers’ health and safety including the national and regional commitment to the WHO strategies that aim at providing the vocational safety constituents and plans as well as coordination with all relevant institutions and seeking help of international organizations to expand vocational safety services range. She thanked all the organizers, hoping that the conference would end up in practical and applicable recommendations to enhance the currently exerted efforts and activating the national safety strategy. After the exhibition’s ribbon-cutting ceremony Dr. Modi Al-Humoud visited the KNPC pavilion and praised the company’s sponsorship of the conference.
ILO representative Dr. Samira Al-Tuwaijri said in a speech that adopting vocational health and safety management systems resulted in highly positive consequences at the level of protecting workers’ health and upgrading their productivity.Dr. Ahmed al-Shatti, Conference President stated that the conference served as an important opportunity for representatives of the GCC countries to exchange experience and expertise in the field of vocational health and safety. He added that the conference aimed at integrating vocational health and safety within the government plans, training national cadres, highlighting the link between vocational health and safety on one hand and productivity and sustainable development on the other beside implementing the international initiatives in the field of vocational health and safety


MAB Refinery Hosts Informative Seminar on Information Security

In presence of Mr. Mohamed Gazi Al-Mutairi, DMD, MAB refinery, and a number of executives and employees, a seminar on information security was arranged on 20/5/2009 at the Auditorium- MAB Admin Building. This came as a sequel in the series of informative seminars organized by the Information Quality and Security Division-IT Dept., to qualify KNPC employees on coping with the latest updates in the field of Internet applications and online shopping.


As the travel and leave season approaches, IT Dept., planned organizing a series of seminars on the information security policies in order to upgrade staff awareness on the secure usage of the Internet, including payments against hotel and air ticket reservations, handling the secure shopping process through Internet and overcoming any possible risks.The event started with a presentation by Engineers Hasan Al-Hammadi and Jinan Al-Saad -IT Dept. staff, on ways of secure shopping, paying bills and booking through the Internet. They briefed the audience on the best and most secure means of payment via the Internet. During the presentations, they stressed the critical need for using antivirus programs and long passwords including a combination of letters and numbers to obtain more protection when using the Internet. Later the attendants posed their queries that were addressed by the IT engineers.Before end Mr. Mohamed Ghazi Al-Mutairi presented mementos to the two lecturers and praised the sincere efforts and initiatives of the IT Dept. He also thanked all the Information Quality and Security Division staff who participated in preparing and presenting such valuable awareness seminars. He proposed posting the seminar’s content on the company’s portal to be available for all KNPC employees


KNPC Honors Participants in the LDP

KNPC arranged on 2/6/2009 at Hilton Al-Mangaf the annual party for honoring the participants in the Leadership Development Program (LDP) which included three categories of leaders namely DMDs, Department Managers and Team Leaders. The event was attended by Mr. Farouk Al-Zanki, Chairman & MD, DMDs, Department Managers, TL’s and staff members.In his speech, Mr. Fahad Fahad Al-Ajmi, DMD Finance & Admin Affairs said that KNPC is keen on adopting the programs that upgrade the standard of all employees through the implementation of KPC strategies in this regard. Within this context, KNPC adopted LDP which aims mainly at upgrading the competence of the seniors and provide them with the skills required to perform their tasks, allow them to depict their weak and strong areas and devise the means needed to upgrade their competence. He pointed out that the Human Resources Dept (HRD) in cooperation with the leading international companies in this field organized this program which included various training sessions and workshops. All DMDs in addition to 13 department managers and 126 Team Leaders took part in the program. Al-Ajmi pointed out that the Leaders’ Qualification Center affiliated to KPC is currently devising special programs for the department managers of the oil sector. Moreover, the HRD arranges outstanding programs for team leaders to complete the developing programs for the current TLs employed after the inauguration of the program.The event included showing a short film on the LDP details and goals and a presentation on the most significant phases of the training courses run in London for the DMDs and department managers. Additionally, there were shots for the TL training program run in Al-Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.Concluding, Mr. Farouk Al-Zanki awarded the DMDs with memorial shields for their participation in the LDP. Also Mr. Fahad Fahad Al-Ajmi awarded the department managers memorial shields. In turn the DMDs distributed appreciation certificates to the TLs and to those who organnizesd and put the program in effect.


MAA Refinery Celebrates GRTA Completion

MAA Refinery celebrated the completion of the General Refinery Turn Around (GRTA) process according to the Gantt chart and the inauguration of safe operation of the units that were under maintenance.The celebration arranged on 27/5/2009 at the main conference room of the refinery was attended by Mr. Asaad Al-Saad, Dy. Chairman & DMD-MAA Refinery, Mr. Mohamed Naser Al-Ajmi, Coordinator – General Maintenance Works and a large number of engineers and employees who played a prominent role in finalizing the renovation of half of the refinery units.In an opening speech Mr. Asaad Al-Saad voiced appreciation for those who accomplished up to the utmost competence the GRTA works according to the set plan. He affirmed that despite the difficulties and challenges addressed usually during the GRTA process and in particular in presence of the huge number of equipment and staff , participants from all refinery departments and divisions demonstrated their competence and abilities to overcome the obstacles and finalize the GRTA works in the best way possible.
Mr. Mohamed Naser Al-Ajmi thanked all those who took part in completion of the GRTA process which reflected positively on the re-operation of the units in a secure and efficient way. He pointed out that support from top management was one of the main elements that facilitated the accomplishment of the GRTA program based on forming a special team for this purpose almost a year before the launch of the maintenance operations, in addition to the predominant team work spirit.
The celebration included the screening of a short film shot during GRTA progress which focused on the wide range of GRTA works. Finally, Mr. Asaad Al-Saad distributed appreciation certificates and token gifts to all those who made the GRTA plan a success.


MAB Refinery Drill on Submarine Oil Leakage Combat

For enhancing the preparations and readiness of emergency teams affiliated to KNPC according to the Major Incident Procedure Plan (MIPP), MAB Refinery carried out a drill on 27/5/2009 on the fuel oil pipelines laid under the sea and reaching the man-made island affiliated to the refinery. The drill’s scenario was based on a fuel oil leakage from the submarine pipelines during vessel loading. As a result, the emergency teams rushed to handle the incident in coordination with the KOC Marine Operations Team. The incident’s scenario was reassessed and declared as Tier–II because the oil spill amount was estimated to around 1300 BBL.Moreover, the Top Management Control Centre was activated by Mr. Waleed Al Beaijan, Acting Manager, Operations and the Harbor Master arranged the boats to transfer emergency teams and specialists from (operations / maintenance / safety / environment) to the leakage site to combat the fuel oil spill and to fix the damaged pipe. A group of KOC divers also participated in fixing the damaged pipe after it was isolated. The, KNPC teams cleansed the oil spill with the assistance of the KOC Marine Operations Division and under the supervision of the Resource Co-ordination Center led by Manager, Engineering & Maintenance Department.The MIPP marine oil spill drill was coordinated by Mr. Hamad Jasem, TL Safety & Fire-MAB who thanked all participants from KNPC and KOC. He said that the aim of the joint practices is to foster readiness of the oil sector emergency teams. It is worth mentioning that no human causalities occurred during the drill which left no impact on the refinery’s operations. During the post- drill meeting the participants reviewed the lessons learnt so far.


KNPC Celebrates C&MD Award for HSE Best Performance

HSE Dept held on 2/6/2009 the annual celebration for the distribution of Chairman & MD awards of HSE best performance 2008/2009 at all KNPC sites. The celebration was organized at Al-Durra Ballroom, Hilton Al-Mangaf Hotel and attended by Mr. Farouk Al-Zanki, Chairman & MD, DMDs and a large crowd of KNPC employees.
In an opening speech, Mr. Farouk Al-Zanki voiced appreciation for the creative initiatives launched in the vocational health, industrial safety and environment protection domains and underlined the need to support the employees driving for distinctive performance. He added that since KNPC considers the environment as one of its priorities, it carries out many projects and vital programs that aim at protecting the environment and promoting the quality of the petroleum products, in addition to securing a safe working environment that copes with the latest and incessant developments world wide.
He urged all KNPC employees for adopting a proactive approach, keep on working as one team and do their best to cut down environment incidents.In his speech Mr. Fahd Al-Daihani, Manager, HSE Dept. welcomed the attendants of the celebration which is arranged annually to honor distinctive and best performance employees. He touched on the duties of the panel that is chaired by him in addition to members composed of two representatives for every KNPC working site , with the aim of assessment of the involved works and to decide on the criteria for selection of the winners.
A documentary on the most significant HSE achievements during 2008/2009 was screened, followed by announcing the names of the winners. The Local Marketing Dept. got the platinum award and SHU Refinery got the excellence award. The Projects & Construction Division-LM Dept got the golden award for the Vapor Recovery Unit project, the second golden award went for the Process Engineering Division, Technical Services Dept-MAB Refinery and the last golden award was received by Al-Kharafi National Corporation. The Star Award for Social Institutions went for the Al-Ahmadi Hospital, whereas four silver awards were distributed to the designers of the best poster, best comment, best slogan and the best household safety program affiliated to HSE.
Moreover, the celebration included a draw on 30 awards provided by HSE Dept, in addition to the exhibition that was held on the sideline of the celebration in which a number of the most prominent and HSE specialized international companies participated
