Significant Environment Aspects

Thumb

KNPC is committed to protecting the Environment by maintaining the highest standards for environment protection throughout its operations. Protecting the earth’s natural resource is as important as providing the energy sources so essential to improving our quality of life. Beyond meeting the world’s energy needs, KNPC’s goal is to be recognized and admired in and outside Kuwait for laudable environmental performance. KNPC is an ISO-14001 certified company which makes it mandatory to identify, manage and streamline environmental issues at all its Operations/Sites. It fosters a cycle of continuous improvement and ensures that environmental strategies and standards at KNPC are aligned with national and international standards and regulations.

The Significant Environmental Aspects of KNPC are :

SO2, NOx and Particulate emissions from stacks.

Flaring.

Release of Ozone Depleting Substances, Viz. Halons, Refrigerants to atmosphere.

Fugitive emission from the units and tanks.

Treated effluent discharge to sea.

Containment failure, oil spill.

Disposal of Hazardous waste, viz. Oily Sludge, Spent Catalyst, contaminated soil/waste.

Utilization of power, water and fuel.

Strategic environmental objectives to control the Significant Aspects are:
Thumb

Minimize SOx/NOx Emission from Heaters & Boilers by daily monitoring of fuel/flue gas. Replacement of existing burners in Boilers with low NOx type in Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery.

Minimize SO2 emissions from Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) by monitoring of incinerator stack and upgradation of Tail Gas Treating Units (TGTU) for reducing SO2 emission from SRUs. Commissioning of new TGTU at Shuaiba Refinery is one such evidence.

Minimize particulate emission from Heaters & Boilers by providing Oxygen Analyzers at stack and maximize fuel gas firing.

Minimize dust emission from FCCU using Cyclone Separator and Electrostatic Precipitator.

Relief Gas Management for zero non emergency flaring.

Planned phase-out and replacement of Refrigerants and Halons to comply with the requirements of Montreal Protocol.

Make KNPC operations odorless/fugitive emission free by introducing Odor Management System (OMS) Program for Refineries and Local Marketing facilities.

Revamping the Effluent Treatment Plant at three refineries to further enhance the quality of treated effluent.

Effluent Outfall

Thumb

Avoid contaminated water runoff during steam engine cleaning to drains in LM by installing Water Recycling Plant.

Bring emergencies under control by a procedural framework by introducing Major Incident Procedure Plan.

Major Incident Procedure Plan

Thumb

Manage Solid waste in the KNPC sites by introducing specific waste management programs, viz. Oily sludge treatment facility at MAB, Long term spent catalyst plan and new waste management contract for scrap items.

Sludge Treatment Facility at MAB Refinery

Conservation of resources by optimizing the use of power, water, steam and fuel.
